Current and future state of VGRIssued by kloh
To nicely start this new year, all admins are joining me to give you some news about the present and the future of the website.
Absence of the staff
You're a lot to criticize our lack of involvement on the website. Indeed we won't deny it, we're less active for a while. There are several reasons for this.
First of all, we all have started to work on VGR while we were students. It's a phase of the life where we have plenty of time to spend. Today we all have been getting older, we all work and some even have a family now. So time to dedicate to the website is strongly reduced. That's already a base of explanation.
But even if we have less time to spend on the website, we still want to make it live and improve it!
With this in mind, for about 2 years now, we have started to work on a new version. And it's quite a long project as we have decided to totally redesign the codebase.
Since then, we have decided to not make evolutions of the current website anymore (except for debugging and correcting blocking issues) in order to concentrate our efforts on the next version. This is also an other reason to explain why we're less active.
It's still a little too early to show some concrete results but be aware that we intend to make you actively implying in this project, with beta test steps for instance.
And we're starting right now, sharing with you specifications. Sorry for non-French speaking people, most of the documents are only in French. By the way we would like to translate them into English so please feel free to help us if you wish!
You'll see we have named this project “Normandie”. That's a French region where magicbart comes from (and where he built the first line of code of the website 14 years ago!)
Normandie project goes beyond VGR and its ambition is to be a base allowing to create a community websites. That's why we have created a github organisation.
This way the code will be available for other people to make their own project and it also permits you to help us improving the project!
The "Flow" case
Beyond our lack of involvement, an other polemic topic this last years is how we [admins] treat Flow games (Flow is the first example but we could add others mobile games that some of you consider as without interest on VGR).
The reason why Flow games are on VGR is that one of the main goal of the site is to be a video games records encyclopedia. As such, any games which has record has the right to be on the site.
But VGR is also a records website, meaning a competition spirit. The most implicated members are also the best competitors and it is thanks to them if VGR keep being alive.
However, we have reached our model limits, that is to have the larger number of games as possible, associated to a tough competition between the most talented gamers. So we have to make our model evolve and we're conscious of that since a while, despite what some may think.
Ideas, suggestions, votes… didn't lack. Anyway we want to thank all members who are trying hard to help us find solutions!
We have updated leaderboard to better reflect quality over quantity. But this wasn't enough.
Following some messages on the forum at the end of 2016, we have thought about a solution going further and combining our encyclopedic ambition so as the competition spirit that keeps the website alive.
So we plan to create a competitive leaderboard which will be the main leaderboard, displayed on the home page. The idea is to select games taken into accounts in this leaderboard, according to their competitive interest. Or if we take the problem in the opposite way, the idea is to get out games without interest for the competition, like the Flow.
We will keep a global leaderboard as today but it won't be highlighted anymore.
We can compare this to online games where there often have ranked and non-ranked modes. Global leaderboard would be the non-ranked version of leaderboard and the competitive one would be the ranked leaderboard.
How we will do it precisely stay to be defined and those changes could be further from the leaderboards. For instance, we can imagine that the VGR tournaments take into accounts only games which are in the competitive leaderboard.
But as you may imagine, modifying the leaderboard this way is pretty heavy. So as I've explained it at the beginning, this is not something we'll do on the current version and we'll have to wait the next one to apply it.
This a one more reason to dedicate our time on the next version!
Turned to the future
Here is where we are today. We hope those explanations have reassured you a little concerning the website evolution.
Indeed the site is quite left fallow currently and we are sorry for this as much as you are. But it is to better prepare the future. We would like to go much faster and even if you don't see anything yet, we're moving forward. And we hope giving you some news some.
If you want to help us, don't hesitate. VGR is before all a community and the more we are, better it is.
Before finishing, we particularly want to thank the team members who keep making the site alive, adding new games, validating proofs, animating the forum… And of course we thank all members who keep submitting scores, proofs, messages…
Without all of you, VGR would be nothing.
See you soon!
